Fort St. James Community Profile – Your Source of Information

Two versions of the Fort St. James Community Profile, with information about life and business in our community, are available to view or download here.

The forest industry continues to dominate the local economy, with Conifex Mill operation (acquired from Pope & Talbot in 2008) the biggest employer. Apollo Forest Products, Stuart Lake Lumber and a number of smaller processors are also significant employers. Many independent logging and hauling contractors, as well as forestry consultants and Ministry of Forests employees, also support the forest industry.

A proposed new gold and copper mine at Mount Milligan, close to town, is expected to bring an increased demand for workers and services in the region, as is the planned expansion of the Apollo sawmill.

Recent business sales have been brisk, with several local apartment buildings and a motel changing hands, and two new restaurants opening.

Tourism is a growing industry in the area, with outfitters available for hunting and fishing; boats and floatplanes available for charter. The Fort St. James National Historic Site and other historic buildings attract those interested in history and culture; our provincial parks, private campgrounds and lodges in the area bring out the outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the vast wilderness at our doorstep.
